1. Government launches National Water Informatics Centre to maintain water data.
Government has set up a central body – National Water Informatics Centre to maintain a comprehensive water resources data.
NWIC will be a single window source of updated data on water resources in India.
NWIC will collaborate with national & international research institutes to provide technical support to central & state organisations dealing with water emergency response of hydrological extremes.
2. Delhi to host Festival of Bharat tribute to the majesty and depth of India’s civilization.
Delhi will host a six-day-long Festival of Bharat between May 9 and May 14 as a 21st century tribute to the majesty and depth of India’s civilization.
The event will be held at the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA) in New Delhi.
Scholars, Grammy award winning artistes, rising new stars and prominent public figures will be in attendance.
3. Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu leaves to South America.
Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu has left for a five-day visit to South America’s Guatemala, Peru and Panama.
This will be Vice President’s first overseas visit after assuming the office.
A range of bilateral issues including the strengthening of institutional mechanisms for political interactions, multilateral matters, trade & investments are expected to be discussed during the visit.
4. Air Force formally inducts Dakota DC-3 aircraft; Parshuram back in service after 4 decades.
Dakota DC-3 aircraft of 1940’s vintage named as ‘Parshuram’ ones again joined Indian Air Force more than four decades after the fleet was phased out following an illustrious service record.
5. Sri Lanka, India hold 29th International Maritime Boundary line meeting.
The 29th International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL) meeting between India and Sri Lanka was held onboard Indian Naval Ship ‘Sumithra’ at the Indo-Sri Lanka Maritime Boundary Line off Kankesanthurai.
6. Korean Unification Flag signed at ITFF.
The Korean Unification flag was signed by members of the joint Korean women’s table tennis team at the World Team Table Tennis Championship.
The flag features a blue Korean Peninsula against a white background.
The flag is being used in such tournaments where a unified Korean team is fielded off to participate.
7. Lebanon holds maiden parliamentary elections for first time in 9 years.
Polling has begun across Lebanon, where voters are going to elect their parliament for first time in 9 years.
Last elections in the country were held in 2009, for what was supposed to be a 4 yr term. But parliament extended its term twice due to instability in neighbouring Syria.
Lebanon has one of the world’s highest debt-to-GDP ratios & IMF has warned its fiscal trajectory is unsustainable.
8. Israel pulls out of race for seat on United Nations Security Council in 2019-20.
Israel has withdrew from a race against Germany & Belgium for 2 seats on United Nations Security Council in 2019-20.
Israel was competing with Germany & Belgium for one of the two seats allocated to Western European & Others Group.
Security Council is made up of 5 permanent members – Britain, China, France, Russia & US while 10 other seats are filled by elected members that serve 2 yr stints
9. China Launches ‘APSTAR-6C’ Communication Satellite.
China has launched a new communication satellite “APSTAR-6C” at the southwestern Xichang Satellite Launch Center.
The satellite will provide TV transmission, communication, Internet and multimedia services to customers across the Asia-Pacific region.
Both the satellite and the rocket were developed by the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation.
10. M T Vasudevan Nair wins annual ONV Literary Prize.
Jnanpith laureate M T Vasudevan Nair has won this year’s annual ONV Literary Prize.
The prize was instituted in memory of iconic poet late O N V Kurup, for his overall contributions to Malayalam literature.
11. India seeks $4 bn assistance from Asian Development Bank.
India has requested Asian Development Bank to expand its sovereign and non-sovereign operations in the country by providing financial assistance worth $4 billion a year.
India also requested ADB President Takehiko Nakao to support its endevour towards an inclusive & sustainable growth accompanied by rapid economic transformation.
ADB aims to promote social and economic development in Asia.
12. Asian Development Bank projects India’s growth at 7.3% in 2018.
Asian Development Bank President Takehiko Nakao has noted that India’s growth in 2018 would pick up to 7.3%.
The Bank has also projected that India will remain the fastest growing Asian nation with 7.6% growth in 2019-20.
The size of India’s economy is about USD 2.5 trillion currently, making it the sixth largest in the world.
13. Patanjali ranked as most trusted FMCG brand in India.
Patanjali Ayurved Limited has been ranked as India’s most trusted Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) brand in the TRA’s Brand Trust Report 2018.
In overall brand ranking Patanjali is at 13th rank. The Top Brand is Samsung and Top BFSI is SBI (21 rank).
14. Javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra breaks own National record.
Javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra has broke his own national record by clearing a distance of 87.43m to finish 4th at the Diamond League series.
Chopra, who recently won a gold at Commonwealth Games was up against the likes of Olympic champion Thomas Rohler & World champion Johannes Vetter.
Chopra had set the earlier record of 86.48m when he won a gold medal in 2016 World Junior Championships.
15. Renowned Marathi singer Arun Date dies.
Veteran Marathi singer Arun Date, known for his popular song Shukratara has passed away.
Date, famous for non-film ‘bhavgeet’ (lyrical poetry) songs, had crooned numbers like Shukratara & Ya Janmavar, which became very popular among people.
He contributed to the Marathi music industry for more than 50 yrs.
Date was the first recipient of the state government’s ‘Gajananrav Vatave Puraskar’.
