1. President signs ordinance to provide death penalty to rapists of girls below 12 years.
President Ram Nath Kovind promulgated an ordinance that provides for stringent punishment.
It includes death penalty, for those convicted of raping girls below the age of 12 years.
The ordinance- Criminal Law (Amendment) Ordinance 2018 stipulates stringent punishment for those guilty of rape.
Particularly of girls below the age of 16 and 12 years.
The ordinance also orders death sentence to those guilty of raping girls below the age of 12 years.
2. India to join countries having Sex Offender database.
India will join a club of 8 countries with a sexual offender database to monitor and track those convicted of such crimes.
National Crime Records Bureau will maintain a national database and profile of sexual offenders.
This data will be regularly shared with states and Union Territories for tracking, monitoring and investigation, including verification of antecedents by police.
3. 2% quota for Sports persons in government jobs.
Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao has announced 2% reservation in state government jobs for sportspersons.
K Chandrasekhar Rao extended this sporting gesture while felicitating a group of 18 members.
These participated in the recently concluded Commonwealth Games at Gold Coast.
Currently 2% seats in educational institutions were reserved for sportspersons.
4. Cabinet approved restructured scheme.
Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs has approved a restructured Rashtriya Gram Swaraj Abhiyan aimed at building infrastructure & stepping up initiatives for e-governance.
The scheme will extend to all states & UTs & will include institutions of rural local govt in non-Part IX areas, where panchayats do not exist.
PM Modi will launch the scheme on National Panchayati Raj Day on April 24.
5. Madras High Court has become the first court in south India to introduce e-court fee payment.
The Madras High Court has become the first court in south India and eighth in the country to introduce e-court fee payment facility.
People would now be able to pay the court fees from anywhere, including from home using this application through the Internet
The facility introduced at the Madras High Court would be extended to all the district courts too in a phased manner.
6. Central Project Monitoring Unit for e-Vidhan as a part of Swachhata Pakhwada.
Union Minister Vijay Goel inaugurated the new office of Central Project Monitoring Unit for the e-Vidhan project of the Government at the Parliament House Annexe.
It was done as a part of Swachhata Pakhwada being observed by Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs from 16th to 30th April, 2018.
e-Vidhan is a mission mode project to digitize & make functioning of State Legislatures in India paperless.
7. Fugitive Economic Offenders Ordinance 2018
Cabinet has approved promulgation of an ordinance that will empower government to attach properties both within the country & overseas of fugitive economic offenders.
It seeks to confiscate properties of economic offenders like Nirav Modi who have left the country to avoid facing criminal prosecution.
Only those cases where amount involved is more than Rs.100cr will be covered under this ordinance
8. India and Finland have reached an accord on the tax dispute with Nokia.
India and Finland have reached an accord on the tax dispute with Nokia under the Mutual Agreement Procedure.
The resolution covering the disputes pertaining to Nokia India as well as Nokia Corp brings to an end one of the biggest tax disputes involving multinational companies.
This paves the way for sale of Nokia’s Chennai plant, which has been shuttered since November 2014.
9. 6 Countries suspend Membership in UNASUR Regional Bloc.
Bolivian Foreign Minister Fernando Huanacuni has announced that Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Paraguay and Peru had decided to temporarily leave the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR).
The given differences over choosing the secretary general of the group.
10. Iraq resumes payments of Gulf War reparations.
Iraq has resumed paying Kuwait compensation for the destruction of Kuwaiti oil fields and facilities during the 1990-91 Gulf War with the disbursal of $90 million.
The payment had been suspended since October 2014.
Because of security and budgetary problems that the Iraqi government faced in its fight against Islamic State.
Iraq still has to pay a remaining amount of nearly $4.5 billion.
11. Kyrgyzstan Parliament names Mukhammedkaliy Abylgaziyev prime minister.
Kyrgyzstan’s Parliament named Mukhammedkaliy Abylgaziyev Prime Minister after his nomination by the Social Democratic party which leads the ruling coalition.
Mukhammedkaliy Abylgaziyev replaced Sapar Isakov whose cabinet lost a no-confidence vote.
Mukhammedkaliy Abylgaziyev previously was chief of staff in President Sooronbai Jeenbekov’s office.
12. Airports Authority of India (AAI) got its 1st woman firefighter.
Airports Authority of India (AAI) has appointed its first woman firefighter, Taniya Sanyal.
Taniya is currently undergoing training in Delhi and will be appointed for AAI’s eastern region airports.
13. ICICI Bank launched digital form.
ICICI Bank has introduced a ‘digital form’ which will help open current accounts in a few hours in comparison to an industry average of a few days.
Bank officials would now be able to capture information about customer & business digitally & verify KYC documents in real-time.
Digital forms are expected to help bank secure more clients & help increase bank’s market share.
14. Bengaluru FC wins Super cup football tournament.
Bengaluru FC have won the inaugural edition of Super Cup Football tournament.
In the final at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar today.
They defeated Kolkata football giants East Bengal by a convincing margin of 4-1.
15. Barcelona became the first team in 85 years to win fourth Copa del Rey in a row.
Barcelona became the first team in 85 years to win four straight Copa del Rey titles after defeating Sevilla 5-0 in the final.
Luis Suarez scored twice, and Lionel Messi, Andres Iniesta, and Philippe Coutinho also made the scoresheet for Barcelona’s record-extending 30th Copa triumph.

16. World’s oldest person Nabi Tajima died.
The world’s oldest person Nabi Tajima has died in Japan at the age of 117.
Tajima was born on August 4, 1900, and had more than 160 descendants, including great-great-great grandchildren.
She became the world’s oldest person seven months ago after the death in September of Violet Brown in Jamaica.
