1. HRD Ministry to launch Study In India portal.
HRD Ministry will launch ‘Study in India’ portal that aims to target foreign students to be admitted in Indian institutes
It will enable students from 30 countries to apply for different courses from 150 Indian institutions.
Study in India programme’s objective is to target foreign students by branding India as an attractive education destination.
2. Environment ministry releases draft of NCAP.
Environment Ministry has come out with a draft national action plan proposing multiple strategies to reduce air pollution.
Ministry in the draft said the objective of NCAP is to augment & evolve an effective & a proficient ambient air quality monitoring network across the country.
Ministry hopes to bring down air pollution in 100 non-attainment cities by 50% in next 5 years under the NCAP.
3. India to Grow At 7.4% In 2018: IMF.
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) in its latest World Economic Outlook (WEO) has projected India to grow at 7.4% in 2018 and 7.8% in 2019.
It also held that India will again emerge as world’s fastest-growing major economy at least for the next two years (2019 and 2020).
4. India pools into USD 5mn Small States Fund.
India is among 4 countries to pool into an innovative $5 million fund for small states to obtain easier access to international trade finance.
India joins Sri Lanka, Mauritius & Malta to inject capital into the new scheme, which has Standard Chartered & BoB as its the facility managers.
This new scheme is an example of innovative & collaborative approaches that are pioneered by Commonwealth.
5. India, Sweden to cooperate in Smart Cities.
India & Sweden have agreed to deepen their cooperation in Smart Cities initiative, transport & energy sectors.
The 2 countries will exchange knowledge & explore cooperation on smart cities, including transit-oriented urban development, air pollution control & waste management.
Both sides will also exchange know-how & explore cooperation in areas of electro-mobility as well as renewable fuels.
6. France announces 50 Million Euro Humanitarian aid for Syria.
France will contribute 61.9 million dollars toward urgent humanitarian aid for Syria.
The funds will be allocated to NGOs and U.N. agencies working on the ground in Syria, including the U.N. office for humanitarian affairs.
7. US to restrict movement of Pakistani diplomats.
US has notified Pakistan that the diplomats at their embassy in Washington & consulates in other cities would not be able to travel beyond 40 kms of their offices without permission from May 1.
Diplomats would need to apply for permission at least 5 days ahead of an intended travel outside the imposed 40 kms radius.
Pakistan had already imposed similar restrictions on American diplomats in the country.
8. Digital platform for MSME exporters launched.
Commerce Minister Suresh Prabhu launched FIEO GlobalLinker- A digital platform for MSME exporters to digitise their businesses & join a global community of growing businesses.
It will help in expanding India’s multi-focused export strategy & also aid in connecting art & artisans to market.
FIEO GlobalLinker is setup with a view to make business growth of SMEs simpler, profitable & enjoyable.
9. Lt Gen PP Malhotra takes over as Director-General of NCC.
Lieutenant General PP Malhotra assumed charge as Director General of National Cadet Corps (NCC), the largest uniformed youth organization in the world.
Prior to assuming his present appointment, he was the Chief Engineer of the Army’s premier Northern Command.
10. Facebook introduces new privacy choices.
Facebook would begin rolling out changes to how it handles private data this week to comply with forthcoming EU rules.
Under the new policy, FB users will be asked to review & make choices about ads they receive, including whether they want Facebook to use data from third parties.
FB has recently been rocked by disclosures about hijacking of personal data on tens of millions of its users.
11. Amazon launches international shopping from US.
Amazon has launched an international shopping feature that will enable customers across the world to shop more than 45 million items that can be shipped to their country from U.S.
It will allow customers to shop in 25 currencies, with more languages and currencies to be added in 2018.
The international shopping feature will display pricing, shipping costs and import duty estimates.
12. IISL launches Nifty 200 Quality 30 index.
IISL has launched Nifty 200 Quality 30 index, which will track the performance of select firms based on profitability and earnings growth variability.
Index includes top 30 companies from its parent Nifty 200 index, selected on the basis of their ‘quality’ scores.
Weight of each stock in the index will be based on a combination of stock’s quality score & its free float market capitalization.
13. Bihar, NE states recommended for Ranji Trophy.
Sourav Ganguly-led technical committee of BCCI has unanimously recommended reinstatement of Bihar & inclusion of northeastern states in the 2018-19 Ranji Trophy.
The northeastern states played BCCI U-19 tournaments last season as the Board wanted to gradually integrate them into the system.
Ranji Trophy 2018-19 season is proposed to have 4 Groups with the introduction of pre-quarterfinals.
14. New York Times, New Yorker won Pulitzer.
The New York Times and The New Yorker won the Pulitzer Prize for public service.
The Washington Post won the Pulitzer in the investigative category for relentless reporting that influenced the outcome of the 2017 Senate race in Alabama.
15. Aditi Hydari to receive Dadasaheb Phalke Award.
Aditi Rao Hydari will receive the Dada Saheb Phalke excellence award 2018 for the Best Leading Lady (Critics Award) for her memorable performance in ‘Bhoomi’.
The film, Bhoomi also starred Sanjay Dutt and was about the protective father who saved his daughter from all the evils that surrounded her.
The Dadasaheb Phalke Award is India’s highest award in cinema.
