1. Government approved linking of savings Account & IPPB.
The Government of India has approved the linking of Post Office savings accounts with that of India Post Payments Bank (IPPB).
This will enable Post Office account holders to transfer money from their savings account to any bank accounts.
IPPB is governed by Reserve Bank of India and banking service of post offices comes under the Ministry of Finance.
2. Assam’s Spring Festival began at the Manas National Park on 7th April.
The 2-day Assam Spring Festival began at the Manas National Park on 7th April, where visitors will get to experience the state’s local food, music, handloom and handicrafts.
The aim of the event is to promote the local food and culture of the fringe villagers.
The National park which is also a tiger and rhino reserve covers five districts of Assam.
3. Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan launched PM Ujjwala Yojana inaugurated in Delhi.
Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan launched Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) scheme in Delhi on 7th April and distributed new LPG connections and cylinders to beneficiaries here.
During the event, about 400 LPG connections were handed over to families belonging to below poverty line category.
The PMUY was launched at Yamuna Sports Complex in the national capital.
4. Uttarakhand’s 2nd mega food park inaugurated.
Union Minister for Food Processing Industries inaugurated the second mega food park in Uttarakhand at Mahuakhera Ganj village, Kashipur in Udham Singh Nagar district.
The first Mega Food Park in the state located at Haridwar has already become operational.
The mega food park would have a central processing centre as well as well as three Primary Processing Centres.
5. First Meeting of the NE NITI Forum.
The first meeting of Newly constituted NITI Forum for North East will be held in Agartala, Tripura on 10 April 2018.
The forum will be co-chaired by the Vice-Chairman of NITI Aayog and Ministry of Development of Northeastern Region (DoNER).
The ‘NITI Forum for North East’ was constituted in February 2018 with an aim to ensure sustainable economic growth of the North Eastern Region of India.
6. Three MoUs were signed between India and Equatorial Guinea.
Three Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) were signed between India and Equatorial Guinea.
The MoUs were signed towards affirming cooperation in the fields of medicinal plants, traditional systems of medicine, and health and medicine sector.
An action plan was also devised on cooperation in the field of Information and Communicational Technology.
7. UAE, Malaysia conclude military exercise.
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Malaysia concluded “Desert Tiger 5” joint military exercise aimed at sharing expertise and enhancing joint military actions.
The Desert Tiger series is an annual joint exercise between the two countries.
The exercise also trains ground forces on the use of modern weapons for all types of combat operations.
8. New antibiotic to fight drug resistance or hard-to-treat bacterial infections.
A new class of antibiotics, from an unconventional source which has a distinct way of killing bacteria, has been discovered.
It may help combat drug-resistant or hard-to-treat bacterial infections.
The antibiotic called ‘odilorhabdins’, or ODLs, is produced by symbiotic bacteria.
The bacteria helps in killing the insect and secretes the antibiotic to keep competing bacteria away.
9. Hungarian PM Orban won election.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s ruling Fidesz-KDNP coalition won the general elections in Hungary on 8th April.
Former radical Jobbik party came second with 20% of the vote, and MSZP-P (Socialist-Dialogue) third with 12.13%
The turnout was close to 69%, the second highest since 2002.
10. RBI switches back to GDP model from GVA model to measure economy.
The Reserve Bank of India switched back to gross domestic product (GDP) model from the gross value added (GVA) methodology to provide its estimate of economic activity in the country.
It switch to GDP is mainly to conform to international standards and global best practices.
11. ICICI Bank gets Swift’s new payment service.
ICICI Bank has become first Indian bank to go live on SWIFT’s Global Payment Innovation, an improved cross-border payments service.
The service enables real-time payments tracking across correspondent banks & has a facility to track payments instructions across correspondent banks globally.
12. Sebastian Vettel Wins Bahrain Grand Prix.
Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel won his second Grand Prix in as many races, at the Bahrain Grand Prix.
Mercedes’ Valtteri Bottas finished second by just 0.699 seconds.
13. Mehuli Ghosh clinched silver in shooting.
Indian shooters Mehuli Ghosh and Apurvi Chandela bagged silver and bronze respectively in the Women’s 10m Air Rifle competition at Commonwealth Games 2018.
Singapore bagged the gold medal.
With this feat, India now stands third on the points table with 17 medals in total, including seven in shooting alone.
14. Weightlifter Pardeep claimed silver at Commonwealth Games 2018.
Indian weightlifter Pardeep Singh won a silver medal in the sport at Gold Coast Commonwealth Games 2018.
Last year, Pardeep had claimed a surprise gold medal in his first senior competition in the 105kg category.
Pardeep’s feat now takes India’s medal count to 13 at the Games and 9th in weightlifting alone.
15. India has won five medals in shooting at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games 2018.
Indian shooters Jitu Rai and Om Prakash Mitharwal won gold and bronze medals respectively at Commonwealth Games 2018.
In the men’s 10m air pistol event at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games 2018, Rai shot a total of 235.1 points, thus, registering a new Games record.
Mitharwal bagged the silver medal after shooting a total of 214.3 points.
India has won five medals so far in shooting alone.
16. Manika Batra won gold medal in Table Tennis.
Manika Batra inspired India to a historic gold medal with her stunning singles victories, as she defeated defending champions Singapore 3-1 to claim the gold medal in TT at Commonwealth Games 2018.
This is India’s first ever gold at the multi-sport event.
It was only the second table tennis team gold for India at the Games with the men achieving the feat in the 2006 Melbourne edition.
17. Javed Akhtar awarded ‘Shanti Doot’ award.
Poet, litterateur, author, lyricist and activist Javed Akhtar has been awarded the ‘Shanti Doot’ award by one of the most revered temples in India — the Sankat Mochan Hanuman Mandir in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh.
The award has been instituted a peace price to honour exceptional messengers of peace.
18. Noted Assamese film-maker Munin Barua passes away.
National award winning Assamese film-maker Munin Barua has passed away following a prolonged illness.
