1. Government constitutes committee to regulate news portals.
The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (I&B) has constituted 10-member committee to regulate online portals, including news websites, entertainment sites and media aggregators.
The committee includes Secretaries of the departments of Home, Electronics and Information and Technology, Legal Affairs, and Industrial Policy and Promotion.
CEO of MyGov and one representative each of the Press Council of India and National Broadcasters’ Association will also be part of this committee.
In context of this news, it is important to note that in India, print and electronic media, both are regulated but online media does not come under the ambit of any regulatory mechanism.
The committee will recommend measures to bring online information dissemination under regulation and will look at international best practices on such existing regulatory mechanism.
Besides, it will also propose a policy for foreign direct investment in online media.
2. TN Government rolls out Amma Free Wi-Fi zones.
On 5th April 2018, the Tamil Nadu government launched Amma Free Wi-Fi zones in 5 cities of Tamil Nadu.
On 5th April 2018, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K Palaniswami launched the Amma Free Wi-Fi zones initiative.
This scheme was announced by former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa in September 2016.
It was said that Wi-Fi zones will be set up in 50 spots, mainly in larger bus terminals, parks and commercial complexes.
Amma Free Wi-Fi zones have been introduced at the following five locations:
-Labour Statue at Marina, Chennai
-Central Bus stand at Salem
-Central Bus stand at Tiruchirappalli
-Gandhipuram Bus Stand in Coimbatore
-Mattu Thavani Bus Stand in Madurai
3. Global Logistics Summit held in New Delhi.
The Summit acts as a platform to hold discussions with global experts, academics, government officials and private sector and industry representatives.
Minister Suresh Prabhu said 56 new airports will be ready for operation in the next few years.
4. Sushma Swaraj attended NAM Mid-Term Ministerial Conference in Baku.
On April 4, 2018, Union External Affairs Minister, Sushma Swaraj embarked on a three-day official visit to Azerbaijan’s capital city Baku to participate in Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) Ministerial Conference.
5. Nepal PM on visit to India.
KP Sharma Oli’s visit will provide an opportunity to review wide-ranging cooperative partnership and to progress it further.
He will also engage with the business community as well as the Nepalese diaspora in India.
6. Qatar introduces national service for women for first time.
Women aged over 18 will be able to volunteer for national service under the law.
Every Qatar male aged 18-35 is required to perform a compulsory military service, now extended to a year instead of 3 months.
7. Julius Maada Bio wins Presidential election of Sierra Leone.
Julius Maada Bio has been elected as the new president of Sierra Leone.
He beat incumbent Samura Kamara, who secured 48.19% of the vote.
Sierra Leone is a country in West Africa, on the Atlantic Ocean.
8. Subrata Bhattacharjee appointed as Next Ambassador of India to Serbia
Subrata Bhattacharjee has been appointed as the next Ambassador of India to the Republic of Serbia.
He is an IFS officer of 1989 batch.
He is currently Joint Secretary in Ministry of External Affairs.
9. SBI Life appoints Sanjeev Nautiyal as New MD & CEO.
SBI Life Insurance appointed Sanjeev Nautiyal as its new Managing Director and CEO.
He replaces Arijit Basu, who takes over a key role in the State Bank of India Group.
10. RBI releases first Bi-monthly Monetary Policy Statement 2018-19.
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) released its First Bi-monthly Monetary Policy Statement 2018-19.
After assessing the current and evolving macroeconomic situation in the economy, the six member Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) decided to keep the Repo Rate under the Liquidity Adjustment Facility (LAF) unchanged at 6.0 %.
11. RBI constitutes inter-departmental group to study launching of fiat digital currency.
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has constituted an inter-departmental group to study and provide guidance on feasibility to introduce fiat digital currency backed by it.
It will be submitted by end-June 2018.
Fiat currency is currency that a government has declared to be legal tender.
12. TRAI proposes Wi-Fi grid to bring down cost of internet by 90%.
On April 5, 2018, Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) put forth a concept of open architecture-based public Wi-Fi grid to bring down the cost of the internet by 90%.
Public Wi-Fi grid proposed by TRAI entails various providers coming together to address aspects like services, access, payment, and authentication.
TRAI has already tested this concept on pilot basis and findings from the same have been presented to Union Telecom Ministry to demonstrate the proof of concept of such an architecture.
TRAI Chairman R S Sharma believes that Broadband proliferation across the country is an important pillar of Digital India and Wi-Fi is the cheapest option owing to low cost of equipment and free spectrum.
13. India win South East Asian Women Handball C’ship.
India defeated Bangladesh by 27-10 in a one-sided match to win the fifth South East Asian Women Handball Championship at K.D. Singh Babu Stadium in Lucknow.
14. Louis Vuitton maker becomes world’s 4th richest man.
Bernard Arnault has overtaken Zara Founder Amancio Ortega with a net worth of $70.7 bn.
This comes after the shares of his company Christian Dior rose to a record high.
