1. PM Modi Inaugurates 1st PIO Parliamentary Conference in Delhi.

PM Narendra Modi inaugurates the first Persons of Indian Origin (PIO) Parliamentary Conference in Delhi on the occasion of Pravasi Bharatiya Divas.
The day is celebrated every year to mark the contribution of the overseas Indian community in the development of India.
It also commemorates the return of Mahatma Gandhi from South Africa to Mumbai on 9 January 1915.
In the Conference, the biggest delegation was from Guyana with 20 members of parliament and three mayors.

2. In a First, Delhi Government Launches Common Card for Bus & Metro Rides.

Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal launched a common card for rides on public buses and the metro.
Delhi is the first city in the country to have a common mobility card.
The card, which will function like a debit card, will be operational in all DTC and cluster buses from April 2018.

3. Railways to deploy drones.

Drones would now monitor railway projects, aid crowd management and oversee maintenance works across its zones.
The West Central Railways, headquartered at Jabalpur (MP), is the first zonal railway to procure the drone cameras.
The cameras (UAV/NETRA) would be used for these activities.
The DRDO Netra is an Indian, light-weight, autonomous UAV for surveillance and reconnaissance operations.

4. India unveils its fastest supercomputer  ‘Pratyush’.

India unveiled Pratyush, an array of computers that can deliver a peak power of 6.8 petaflops.
A petaflop is a measure of a computer’s processing speed and can be expressed as a thousand trillion floating point operations per second.
Pratyush is the fourth fastest supercomputer in the world dedicated to weather and climate research and follows machines in Japan, USA and UK.

5. Larger Bench to decide on Section 377.

The SC referred to a larger Bench a writ petition filed by five gay and lesbian members of the LGBT community to strike down the colonial Section 377 in the IPC.
Section 377 of the IPC criminalises homosexuality.
A three-judge Bench, led by Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra, decided to revisit a December 2013 verdict of the Supreme Court in the Suresh Kumar Kaushal versus Naz Foundation.

6. AIIB plans to issue first USD bonds.

China-led Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank plans to issue its first US dollar-denominated bond with the minimum worth of a USD billion by June this year.
In this bank India is a second largest shareholder.
With 84 members so far, the AIIB was officially established in December 2015.
The Beijing-based AIIB is a multilateral development bank with authorised capital of USD 100 billion.

7. World’s largest ice festival in China.

34th Harbin International Ice and Snow Festival, world’s largest ice festival started on January 5, 2018 in Harbin (north-east China).
The festival will continue through late February.
Some of this year’s work centres around Chinese President Xi Jinping’s major foreign policy is also captured in art at this festival.

8. Direct Tax Collections for FY 2017-18 Show Growth of 18.2% up to December, 2017.

The provisional figures of Direct Tax collections up to December 2017 show that net collections are at Rs. 6.56 lakh crore.
Collection is 18.2% higher than the net collections for the corresponding period of last year.
The net Direct Tax collections represent 67% of the total Budget Estimates of Direct Taxes for Financial Year 2017-18 (Rs. 9.8 lakh crore).
Gross collections (before adjusting for refunds) have increased by 12.6% to Rs. 7.68 lakh crore from April to December 2017.
An amount of Rs. 3.18 lakh crore has been received as Advance Tax up to December, 2017 reflecting a growth of 12.7% over the Advance Tax payments of the corresponding period of last year.
The growth in Corporate Income Tax (CIT) Advance Tax is 10.9% and that in Personal Income Tax (PIT) Advance Tax is 21.6%.

9. BSES launches rooftop solar initiative.

In an initiative to promote clean energy, BSES launched the country’s first solar rooftop consumer aggregation programme for residential buildings in New Delhi.
In the first phase of the programme, around 150 residential societies will be targeted in the Dwarka area.
It would help BRPL in meeting its renewable purchase obligation, as well as minimising overloading issues in congested areas.

10. A R Rahman Becomes Sikkim’s Brand Ambassador.

Music composer A R Rahman became the brand ambassador of Sikkim.
The declaration was made by Sikkim CM Pawan Kumar Chamling.
CM Pawan Kumar Chamling felicitated the legendary music composer during an inauguration of the 11-day Sikkim Red Panda Winter Carnival at Palzor Stadium in Gangtok.

11. Saksham Yadav killed in Road Accident.

Five men, including powerlifting world champion Saksham Yadav, died and one other person was injured after their cat met with an accident.
Saksham Yadav, who was admitted in an ‘extremely critical’ condition at the AIIMS Trauma Centre in Delhi, succumbed to his injuries in the evening.
Yadav had won a gold medal for the country in the 2017 Powerlifting Championship in Moscow.

12. Julia Goerges wins Auckland Classic.

Julia Goerges claimed a third-straight WTA title with victory over Caroline Wozniacki in the Auckland Classic final.
ln the final, Goerges was dominant against the top-seeded Dane by 6-4 7-6 (7-4).
The German World No.14 broke in the first game of both sets to place early pressure on Wozniacki.

13. Nick Kyrgios takes Brisbane crown.

Nick Kyrgios defeated American Ryan Harrison to claim the Brisbane International in straight sets.
The 6-4, 6-2 win was the third-seeded Australian’s fourth title on the ATP tour and his first on home soil.
Kyrgios is a polarising figure in Australian sport, his superb tennis skills are often marred by poor on-court behaviour.

14. Nitish Kumar to get Mufti M Sayeed Award.

Bihar CM Nitish Kumar has been selected for the 1st Mufti Mohammad Sayeed Award for Probity in Public Life.
He will be conferred the award at an official function of Jammu & Kashmir government to be held at Jammu on Monday.
The award was constituted recently by the Jammu and Kashmir government to commemorate the death anniversary of PDP founder and two-time J&K Chief Minister Sayeed.
